    „In these troubled times, when our newspapers are full of reports of violence and tragedy, it is reassuring to be able to draw attention to human achievements.” Mit diesen Worten kommentierte der damalige Generaldirektor der europäischen Weltraumagentur ESA (European Space Agency), Erik Quistgaard, im November 1981 in Bremen die Übergabe des ersten, in Europa hergestellten Weltraumlabors an die transatlantischen Partner der NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration). „For the last eight years, hundreds of people of different nationalities have been working together to develop Europe’s manned re-usable laboratory, Spacelab. We, in ESA, as driving force behind the programme, are proud to have been associated with them and, by encouraging the development of the very advanced technology needed for this programme, feel we have contributed, in our own specialised field, to forging closer ties between European countries.” [...]
