    Der Regimewandel in Ostmittel- und Südosteuropa 1989 und die Implosion der Sowjetunion samt Hegemonialsphäre 1991 haben im Bereich der Geschichtswissenschaft gleich zwei gravierende Folgen gezeitigt: Zum einen haben Historikerinnen und Historiker im östlichen Europa an präkommunistische Historiographietraditionen angeknüpft sowie den Anschluss an internationale Standards und Trends gesucht. Und zum anderen hat die internationale Geschichtsforschung ein neues Interesse an der Geschichte des östlichen Europa im Allgemeinen und an seiner geschichtswissenschaftlichen Produktion im Besonderen entwickelt.
