Introduction Au commencement de l’année 1887, le nommé Mehmed Chérif Effendi, propriétaire d’un terrain connu sous le nom de Ayaa, et situé aux environs de Saïda, l’ancienne Sidon, entreprit, en vertu d’un permis délivré par l’autorité locale, certains travaux dans sa propriété, à l’effet d’extraire des pierres à bâtir. Le 2 mars 1887, Mehmed Chérif Effendi, se conformant à la loi sur les antiquités, vint avertir le caïmakam de Saïda, Sadik Bey, qu’il avait découvert un puits au fond duquel il pouvait y avoir des tombeaux.
